The Story Behind It: A Family Legacy With a Strange Clock
The UR-10 isn’t a random concept watch. It has roots.
URWERK co-founder Felix Baumgartner comes from a watchmaking family. His grandfather was a watchmaker, and his father, Gérard Baumgartner, specialized in restoring antique clocks.
The spark for the UR-10 comes from an unusual pendulum clock signed by Gustave Sandoz—a piece with three sub-dials and hands that didn’t tell time in the normal way. After restoring it and decoding how it worked, Gérard discovered it was essentially tracking Earth’s rotational trajectory. He later handed that restored clock to Felix.
That’s the emotional backbone of the UR-10: it’s modern, but it’s not detached from history. It’s a family story turned into high-level independent watchmaking.
